We are dealing with a disease
As most people dealing with a loved suffering from alcoholism already know, we are constantly being told that alcoholism is a disease. Veterans of the Al-Anon Program remind us of this disease at most meetings. If this is truly the case, then why do I have such a difficult time accepting this fact? We are told that a cancer patient is at the mercy of the effects of this disease, so to, is the alcoholic at the mercy of alcoholism. Then why do I have such a difficult time accepting this fact? Do other diseases affect people's judgement? Do other diseases impair one's ability to drive a car? Do other diseases destroy relationships like alcohol can? I often hear that there is a light at the tunnel but I'm still searching and looking for that light.
